Florida Department of Education/Tuition assistance
Florida Tuition and Fee Exemption for Homeless Students
Amount varies
No tuition and no fees at any Florida College System institution, state university, or school district workforce programme, if a Florida public school has determined you are a homeless child or youth. Moving into a dormitory does not end it, and once you have it for one year it carries into the next unless your situation changes.
Tuition and fees, including lab fees, are not charged at all. It is an exemption rather than a payment, so nothing arrives and nothing is owed.
No deadline
What you need
The official page does not list required documents. Check the official page before you apply, since a provider can ask for paperwork it does not publish.
How to apply
- 1Ask your school district for the determination in writingThe statute wants a determination already made by a Florida public school. Every district has a McKinney Vento homeless liaison and making these determinations is their job. Ask for it while you are still at school, because it is much harder to obtain once you have left.
- 2Give it to the admissions or financial aid officeA college or university can also make the determination itself. Living in university halls does not disqualify you, and the statute says so in as many words.
