Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development/Government grant

Missouri Survivor's and Disabled Employee's Educational Grant

Amount variesLimited number available

A grant covering tuition and incidental fees for the children and spouses of Missouri public safety officers killed or permanently and totally disabled in the line of duty. Stepchildren and adopted children count. For a child it runs to age 24, and it covers certificates as well as degrees.

Tuition, which the statute defines as tuition or incidental fees or both, at the resident rate. It is paid within the limits of what the legislature appropriates, so it is a grant against a fund rather than an entitlement, and other aid you receive must be reported.

What you need

The official page does not list required documents. Check the official page before you apply, since a provider can ask for paperwork it does not publish.

How to apply

  1. 1Apply through the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce DevelopmentThe coordinating board administers the grant rather than the college. Contact them directly, and mention whether you are applying as a child or as a spouse, because the age rules differ.
  2. 2You can move institutions without losing itThe statute says a recipient may transfer from one approved public or private institution to another without losing entitlement, and the board adjusts the amount. Students often assume a transfer ends this kind of grant.

Deadline
RollingNo date in the statute. The Coordinating Board for Higher Education administers it, and because it is paid from an appropriation rather than as an entitlement, asking early in the year is worth more than the absence of a deadline suggests.
