Oregon Chafee Education and Training Grant

Amount variesLimited number available

Up to 5,000 dollars a year for Oregon students who were in foster care, or who were adopted or entered guardianship from care after their 13th birthday. There are four deadlines a year, one per term, and the autumn one is 1 August.

The ceiling for 2025-26 is 5,000 dollars a year and awards never exceed it. What you actually get is need based and set by your college after your other aid, and any Chafee voucher money you receive directly from the Department of Human Services is subtracted from it.

What you need

The official page does not list required documents. Check the official page before you apply, since a provider can ask for paperwork it does not publish.

How to apply

  1. 1If you were in care in another state, apply through that stateOregon says so directly. Applying through Oregon when you were in care elsewhere means extra documentation, and the other state's programme is the one meant for you.
  2. 2Tell them every term you will attend, not just the next oneThe application asks you to indicate all terms you attended or will attend. Naming only one is how students end up considered for a single term when they could have had the year.

Deadline
term basedOne deadline per term rather than one a year: 1 August for autumn, 1 November for winter, 1 February for spring, 1 May for summer. Applying after a term's date does not disqualify you from later terms, so a missed date is not the end of it.
