Washington Passport to Careers

Amount variesNot guaranteedLimited number available

A scholarship and support for students who were in foster care in Washington, usable for college or for a registered apprenticeship. Up to six years. The catch is age: you have to be enrolled, at least half time, by the time you are 21.

Capped two ways at once: it cannot exceed resident undergraduate tuition and fees at the most expensive public institution in the state, and it cannot exceed your financial need once every other grant, scholarship and waiver you receive is counted. It runs for up to six years, or 150 percent of the published length of your programme.

What you need

The official page does not list required documents. Check the official page before you apply, since a provider can ask for paperwork it does not publish.

How to apply

  1. 1Contact the Washington Student Achievement CouncilThey run it and they verify eligibility, including residency where foster placement or homelessness makes the normal test impossible. Ask them before assuming you do not qualify on residency.
  2. 2Consider an apprenticeship, not only collegeThe same programme funds registered apprenticeships and recognised preapprenticeships, including entrance requirements and occupation specific costs. You can use both pathways at different times, though not at once.

Deadline
RollingNo date in the statute, but there is an age limit that works like one: you must be enrolled at least half time by 21. If you are close to that, this is urgent in a way a deadline would make obvious and an age limit does not.
